What You Need to Open a Bank Account

1/17/2019

new bank account checklistIf you’re getting ready to take the leap and open a new account with SSB (or any other bank), coming prepared can save you time and a wasted trip. Whenever you open a new bank account, whether it’s savings or checking, there are several things you’ll need to be sure to bring.

Things to Have with You

To open a new account, all banks will need a few key items:

  • A valid government-issued photo ID: driver’s license, passport, state ID, etc.

  • Several key pieces of personal information: date of birth, social security number, phone number, etc.

If you don’t have a driver’s license or passport, you can always get a state ID card from the Department of Motor Vehicles. Pennsylvania residents can find out more here.

If you are opening a joint account, you’ll need to be sure to have all required information for all parties listed on the account.

Things You Might Need

Depending on the type of account, the bank’s requirements, and your age, you may also need one or more of the following items:

  • A certain amount of money for an initial deposit.

  • A co-owner if you’re under 18 - generally a parent or legal guardian to cosign all paperwork.

Needing an initial deposit will vary by bank and account type. For example, at SSB you do not need to have an initial deposit to open either of our personal checking accounts. You do, however, need an initial balance to open a savings account, but the required amount varies depending on the type of savings you chose. Just contact us to find out what to expect.

If you are required to make an initial deposit, you can chose to transfer your balance from an existing account (you'll need the account number and routing number), deposit cash, or write a check.

What to Do Next

If you’re opening a new account for the first time or are adding an account to ones you currently have, you’re all set! Opening an account is a quick and easy process if you come prepared with these necessary items.

If you’re transferring from another institution, you’ll have a few more steps to finish. At SSB, our personal or business switch kits can help you make sure you don’t miss a thing.
